My dear Pecksniff. One cringes at the attempts of “Your Party” to define itself. I invite you to picture the scene as Messrs Ali, Galloway and Corbyn meet to thrash out the detail. I don’t think the result would reflect the views of the “mainstream”, whatever that may now be.

If the “mainstream” is largely pro European, in favour of PR and wants to see public ownership of utilities, you’d think that this is an opportunity for a coalition of LD, SNP, Green, Plaid and the SDLP to get themselves together and sort out a way forward. Some Labour members would be attracted.

  1. What stops it is parochialism and the mind set that “you can’t play with my ball”. Let someone come forward with the vision and the charisma to pull this off. Quite who, I know not. I’d maybe venture Andy Burnham but I doubt he’d shake off his Labour roots. The Pecksniff task is to find that leader!
