I am a Canadian law professor based in the US. I write about legal ethics, access to justice, and the future of law. My views are not those of my employers.

  1. People in California and DC loathe the deployments - per actual polling - but we're supposed to believe that there is no way to talk about them without helping Republicans. No wonder Shor is a multimillionaire.

  2. I really, really don’t think what blue voters want to hear right now is “military takeover is redundant because we can crack down on crime more effectively.” They want to hear “this is fascism and we won’t stand for it” and vanishingly few national dems are doing that

Jeffries on Trump planning a military crackdown in Chicago: "We should continue to support local law enforcement and not simply allow Donald Trump to play games with the lives of the American people as part of his effort to manufacture a crisis and create a distraction because he's deeply unpopular"

  3. I like what Newsom is doing.

I like what Pritzker is doing.

I like what Mamdani is doing.

We need all hands on deck NOW.

We can worry about the presidential race LATER.

    Once we secure its relevance.

  4. With Trump poised to deploy the National Guard in 19+ states, this case is the whole ballgame. Massive moment in US history.

On the latter, Judge Breyer is likely to rule soon that the LA deployment violates Posse Comitatus. I think that the ruling will survive on appeal, but it will be close. I don't want to contemplate how SCOTUS will assess occupations of Democratic-led cities.

  5. In the end, we’re going to have to make some choices about what R1 universities are: institutions of higher learning, pure inquiry, and broad-based research or money machines that blow in the wind with donors and the latest trends. Only one path is viable long term, in my opinion.

The hits keep coming. “The departments that won’t be accepting Ph.D. students now include art history, cinema and media studies, classics, comparative literature, East Asian languages and civilizations, English language and literature, Germanic studies, linguistics, Middle Eastern studies…”

The arts and humanities dean said “nearly all” faculty leaders preferred “a broader pause for the division.” Some social sciences programs also aren’t accepting new students.

More UChicago Ph.D. Programs Will Pause Admissions

  6. Americans- includingly politically engaged ones - may be underestimating the damage that Trump has already done. The US will need a national unity government to make the kind of structural changes that are needed to restore its democracy.

"A tent that stretches from Zohran Mamdani to Gavin Newsom to Bill Kristol" is, by any statistical measure, the absolute bare minimum needed to have even a remote chance of stopping fascism and you need to do any introspecting and pill-swallowing you can now to accept that fact. Bare minimum.
