I spent my morning with Sean, who gave me an amazing tour of his Kusshi Oyster Farm - the result of generations of experience grounded in family and place.
Shellfish farms employ 1,000 British Columbians and strengthen our coastal communities, along with the B.C. Shellfish Growers Association.

They also participate in a co-op program, giving students a valuable opportunity to learn applied sciences and see work in virology, genomics, haematology, and more.

They provide specialized diagnostic services that help First Nations, communities and companies monitor animal and environmental health through scientific analysis.

Tucked away in the middle of downtown Campbell River is the BC Centre for Aquatic Health Sciences. This non-profit society located on B.C.’s coast has a state-of-the-art facility that researches and analyses aquatic life from our ocean and freshwater systems.
