I'm sure it's not impossible to find someone whose first experience with SRW was these recent games, I doubt the series is picking up a lot of people. Anyone who might have been lured in was probably already on board, and mecha aren't as attention grabbing anymore.

I'm away from my records now, but the card game was kind of neat, Choujin Ultra Baseball's super powers added a fun twist, Koshien had a good structure, and there was a game by Capcom IIRC that made a story mode and scaled the games down to key events.

Super Darius is one of the gems of the PC Engine. A genuine, "How did they manage to pull this off?" game as the gigantic arcade game was brought home with a lot fewer compromises than you'd expect and some very surprising additions.
