Edumucator. Elite social-distancer. YIMBY. Humanist. Movie snob. Dad-Bod. Cities for people, not cars. “Cincy ‘Til I Die.” This is the way.

  1. I must continue to insist that this is not a strong regime. It does not have the kind of pan-societal support needed to enforce Gleichshaltung. It has significant elite buy-in and a small popular coalition, but it is brittle and feeble and will collapse if pressed hard enough.

Situation on 14th St and W St. NW, with federal agents -- no specific agency identified -- pulling cars over for checks. They arrested a Black woman in this car.

BIG crowd of people shouting at police.

    "Fuck you!"

  2. Americans are being conditioned to think of crime as an urban issue. Ask why.

Alabama's murder rate is far higher than New York City's.

Urban crime is not worse than rural crime. It's just more visible. In cities everything is more visible.

So be careful what you blame city leaders for.

  3. As someone who has lived my whole adult life in cities deemed “dangerous”—NYC, NOLA, and SF—I think a lot about how dense cities require patience, calm, and tolerance in the midst of social difference, which are of course exactly the civic virtues that the right resents being told to cultivate.

  4. Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good.

I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.
