And Congress needs to do its part — starting by restoring D.C.’s budget so we can fully fund the public safety, housing, and health resources our residents deserve.

Homelessness should never be criminalized. Just because someone is unhoused does not mean they deserve to be thrown out. This is a crisis, not a crime. We have resources and availability right now, and we encourage everyone who is unhoused to come inside and connect with the help that’s here.

We must also invest in what matters — Medicaid, housing, and other critical supports should never be cut.

To our youth: the data is clear. Locking kids up for petty crimes often makes them more likely to reoffend. Detention is not a solution. True justice means protecting our youth while holding them accountable.

Crime is at a 30-year low, but we still have work ahead. Accountability isn’t negotiable. Anyone who commits a crime, regardless of age, must be held responsible. Period.

Like any other jurisdiction, we’re working every day to keep our city safe. It’s not easy, but we’re doing it and I know we must do more. I understand the fears and frustrations of our residents.

I’m frustrated that the President is using D.C. as a political pawn, treating our city as a backdrop for national politics. It’s a contradiction to pardon those who incited the January 6 riots, then turn around and make D.C. the poster child for violent crime to push an agenda.
