The American press and public really need to figure out how to simply dismiss Trump's pretextual claims for authoritarian attacks and then resist the attack itself, not debate the claim. We have spent months asking "but is the Ivy League really antisemitic?" and now "but is DC really crime-ridden?"
Trump is a liar doing what authoritarians do. There should be zero discussion of his purported reasons for doing it. The only story is that Trump is attacking the liberties of Americans.

Exactly correct. This is especially true for the "he's doing X to distract us from Y!" nonsense. Everything he does is an expression of his autocracy; there's no difference between each specific thing.

The only thing I would change in that statement is to expand it to “attacking the liberties of every person in the United States.” Because he has been playing calvinball with the rules of being here “legally” and declaring people aliens who were not the day before. They have rights.

Yes, thank you for this! People keep exclaiming, on all the particular inconsistencies, hypocrisy, and lies, as if the details there are the real story. Every time I see that I become disheartened because it seemed like our side is still end to sleep playing catch-up.

Unfortunately corporate media owners dominate the American press & have different priorities than defending democracy; which is manifesting full force: WaPo, LATimes,Disney ABC
NYT still sanewashing and now democracy-washing.
Journalists doing pro-democracy work aren’t given corporate platforms.
