I'm an academic & never going to make "real money" as governments keep chipping away at my field & persuading voters that a university education is a waste of time/money. I'd advise anyone wanting a solid, rewarding, demanding career to become a hairdresser. People will ALWAYS want their hair cut.

I have the utmost respect for my hairdresser: on her feet all day; always smiling & pleasant; always diplomatic as customers demand the latest celebrity cut/style even if it clearly won't suit them; fielding "HOW much?" complaints from those who don't understand overheads or liability insurance...

  1. always having to look her best no matter how she feels; always risking ruining her clothes with chemicals & colours; listening to clients' boring, sometimes traumatic, stories with sympathy & understanding. It's an art. It's hard work.
