I think one of the things people misunderstand about being anti-ChatGPT and related products is that they are being forced into institutions and other products and services in ways that affect all of our lives whether they work or not and we will all have to deal with the consequences

Thrilled to share our new paper out in BMC, part of my postdoc at @cornellvet.bsky.social! 🐘🐀 We found that larger mammals evolve more diverse morphologies, while smaller ones can explore many locomotor strategies without much change to their forelimbs. bmcecolevol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10....
Body mass evolution as a driver of morphological and ecological diversity in terrestrial mammals - BMC Ecology and Evolution
Body mass plays a fundamental role in the macroevolutionary dynamics of morphological, ecological, and phylogenetic diversification. Given biomechanical principles, large body masses in terrestrial ve...

US PhDs are effectively part time PhDs: grad students at most institutions spend half of their time working for the tuition and stipend. A 4 year PhD is effectively 2 years of research, which is little more than a Masters.
Nearly all PhDs take 5 years--with finishing in 4 a rare outcome. This is deliberately designed to eliminate the international powerhouse that is US postgraduate training.

Integrating intraspecific trait variability in functional diversity: An overview of methods and a guide for ecologists
Variability in traits within species (intraspecific trait variability; ITV) has attracted increased interest in functional ecology, as it can profoundly influence the detection of functional trait pa....

I know nobody has any bandwidth right now, especially not in the US, but the ASN is seeking additional mentors for the EEB Mentor Match, a programme that supports prospective grad students in ecology and evolutionary biology. It's genuinely a low time commitment, I promise! eebmentormatch.com

There's no better poster child for the mess the UK is now in than the fact that the Financial Times - home to the "how to spend it" supplement on luxury geegaws - is now one of the most left-wing media channels in the country simply because it's still interested in reality.

The “the British government are going to ban VPNs” discussion is revealing that a lot of people don’t realise the “remote access system” they’re using to work from home is, uh, a VPN.

Evolutionary age correlates with range size across plants and animals - Nature Communications
Why are some species widespread while others are found only in small, isolated areas? This study shows that species with narrow ranges, and thus higher extinction risk, are often island-restricted, po...
