I remember reading the Gettysburg address as a teenager in the 90s and wondering at the concept of "any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure". America seemed so unassailable, the democratic ideals it espoused so secure, odd to think of democracy as fragile. Seems a long time ago now
