I have always been confused as to why SS has a cap that is completely out of sync with what high income earners contribute. I know there has to be a reason-but hell if I know what it is.

Making 10k or 100k? You’re paying 12.4% regardless
Rich or self employed? Tough luck you’re paying 12.4%
Hid all your income? No social security benefits for you
Cut off at $180k is to limit the retirement benefit to the super rich
