  1. Why isn't virtue consequentialism more popular? It would have a thick concept of human flourishing, not just "utility", and would justify virtues because they have human flourishing as an outcome. Or is this how virtue ethicists think about it anyway? #virtue #ethics

  2. AI knows more biology than you think. Gemini said "A proposal for gene therapy directly targeting the nuclei of mature red blood cells for disease treatment would face a fundamental and insurmountable challenge: mature red blood cells in mammals do not have a nucleus. [...]"

  3. Ultimately, what we care about is that opinions are justified. One way for an LLM to support an opinion is to link through to an expert who states that opinion. But this is still fallible, experts can be wrong. Wouldn't it be nice if LLMs could help in assessing competing arguments?

  4. Why are Reform against net zero? Because it sounds like a kind of collective action imposed on the sovereign individual.

So I think politicians should instead talk about cheap electricity.

They're the exact same policies, but one sounds like a tangible benefit, the other like a chore

  5. "If someone uses an LLM as a replacement for search, and the output they get is correct, this is just by chance" I think there's an equivocation here. The output of any stochastic algorithm is "just by chance". But the effect here is to imply that it is not likely to be correct - without evidence

  6. I'm curious how an argument from evolutionary psychology to politics is meant to work. I imagine it would have to say at some stage "that's natural". So it would be committing the fallacy of assuming that what is natural is good.

  7. Well, we are confronted by ethical decisions all the time, especially in politics. My idealistic view is that if we all learned how to listen to others and give reasons for our views, the world would be a better place. And LLMs could help (but not this one yet)
