I maintain that one of the internet's main sins was making everyone believe they were a good reviewer of media.

heads up if you liked “sinners” you have no movie credibility with the guy who planned his whole weekend around streaming a film that just opened in theaters

tweet from Dave Portnoy @stoolpresidente:

I've heard all the hype about Weapons. Planned my entire weekend around watching it. I didn't realize it wasn't available to stream yet. Sol went with Sinners instead. I may be like 6 months late with this critique but that was one of the most overhyped overrated movies of all time. If you say that movie was great you have no movie credibility with me.

  1. Something that lives in my bones is that scene where Don Draper looks at a guy complaining about using music thats out of date in an advert and says "Why are you cursing?"

So much of review culture is Only about men getting the opportunity to be angry at something out loud.

  2. People who say "This film/show/game/whatever is shit" suddenly have nothing* to say when you ask them to actually explain why they think something is shit.

(* Sometimes you some vague complaint about "wokeness" from 'em, so again, they have nothing to say)

  3. It may also have something to do with people confusing opinions with facts and vice-versa.

  4. Just yesterday someone on FB told me I'd be ill suited to a job in cinema reviewing because I thought the original Halloween was a quite boring film and preferred the Rob Zombie remake. Who knew that movie opinions had an objectively correct and incorrect position?

  5. Probably the healthiest (even if often inaccurate) assumption you can have is that you are stupid. Everyone should feel stupid for most of the time, it builds character.

  6. "Overrated" is such a tell. My dude, if you're judging the quality of art based on what you think of what other people thought about something, you'll never truly enjoy anything.

  7. Or indeed a good reviewer of anything full stop.

“I’m giving this one star because I stubbed my toe this morning and I’m in a bad mood.”

  8. "I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave." - his streaming service, probably.

Do you think he was looking forelward to "weapons" being about him and his buddies?

  9. Once someone uses the terms “plot hole” or “bad writing” I just stop reading/listening/watching. It’s learned behavior from the most dead-soul’d people imaginable
