Car Talk was great I think we all agree, but it was great because everyone was constantly engaging in maintenance efforts that we just don't worry about today
Reliability is better, but another reason we don’t worry about them because we can’t do much of them anymore without access to proprietary software and tools. Car manufacturers have worked for years to design products that can’t be fixed by home mechanics.

They're harder for home mechanics to fix because they often require more sophisticated equipment and knowledge, which isn't as easy for a home mechanic to acquire and learn. But that same advanced technology has made maintenance and repair much less necessary. I wouldn't give up that trade-off.
