Wow. On NPR, @gbrumfiel.bsky.social reports a Social Security official “copied the Social Security numbers, names and birthdays of over 300 million Americans to a private section of the agency's cloud.”

The source is a whistleblower, who is named: Charles Borges, SSN chief data officer.

  1. “In the event cloud is breached”? It’s been sold and resold already. Why do you think it got copied in a first place? To have a copy?

  2. By the time this is over, everyone is going to need new SSNs, new bank account numbers, new credit card numbers, new everything

  3. So, every single American is part of a class against the government and whomever did the copying and whomever gave the order. Personally and severally?

  4. We’d all assumed this, right? Elon Musk (remember him?) had his lackeys steal the personal information of the US population. Outright theft. “DOGE” (obviously) never cared about “waste”. I honestly think the whole scam was just a plot by Musk to steal every scrap of data held by government agencies.

  5. Geez, just hold on a minute. Palantir, Russia, and dark web doge are almost done copying it. They'll take good care of it.

  6. The word "wow" has fallen out of my vocabulary. There's not a thing this authoritarian administration could do that would surprise me any longer.

  7. Trump allowing our data to be put at risk and used and consolidated by Palantir is one of the most horrific breaches of trust by the federal government ever.

  8. The more serious question is why they wanted those data in the first place. It seems pretty obvious that it was directly targeted, but for what reason?

  9. The original story was in the New York Times. Everyone is followed it including NPR. I’m not knocking NPR but if you have a chance, check the times.

  10. i'm just wondering when we as citizens can start suing the bejeezus outa these mofos! i mean, i'll bet there's hardly a single citizen (save the billionaires) who does not have standing.

  11. They should never have had access, security protocols are there for a reason and that reason isn’t to make life hard, it’s to secure the data. These really are the worst developers, every one of them I met, all vibes, nothing else.

  12. Pretty sure I predicted that in like March 🫠 Chuck is a hero and we support what he did 1000%. We need more of that level of courage and resistance ✊✊✊

  13. OMG. … THIS could REALLY screw up the lives of retirees who depend on their Social Security checks to live.

    YIKES.

Seniors: better think about alternative places to live … and/or sources of income … if this thing collapses, you get hacked and your SS money stolen.

  14. I called that as it was happening - when DOGE “interns” started their invasion.

That data got copied for nefarious purposes. Guaranteed.

The appointment of “Big Balls” in HSA? No coincidence. Just watch. They are doing data integration right now. Mark my words.

    1
  15. No surprise. DOGE is 1. incompetent and 2. mainly interested in acquiring our data. Which means, in either case, they could not care less about the security of the data.

  16. Someone should go to prison for this and Elon Musk should go to prison for allowing a bunch of teenage incels to muck around in our most important databases. And all Republicans in congress should resign after letting Musk run wild.

  17. I think it's important to mention that this is probably like -- 300 million felonies, right? Like actually, 300 million felonies?

  18. I don’t know about this Steve. You seem intense about it with your opening Wow. But you aren’t credible as a source. I listened to you time and again put down Kamala Harris and Joe Biden and look at the mess you helped put in place. It’s not a government, it’s a national catastrophe. On you dude

  19. Hey, NPR, I'm finally gonna try and apply for my SS now. Been too afraid, but now... nothing to lose. I'll keep a journal of my experience. Yours, if you can use it.

  20. Musk will hate that his evil plan is now public knowledge. You can bet "DOGe" also has copies of each and every computer system in the US Government including the Treasury department. What could possibly go wrong

  21. Every damn day with this shit. "A 17 year old named 'McLovin' who lives in Mar-A-Lago was found to have put America's nuclear codes onto a Facebook post which experts fear could be really bad" Just kill us all and be done with it already

  22. welp, we've gone past deport Musk to arrest him immediately for national security reasons....figure the rest out later

  23. Data breaches are supposed to be reported by the responsible party. With details on what and a remedy. Class action lawsuits must be filed!

  24. Is this really a surprise? When I’d heard DOGEs twenty-something hackers got access to government databases the FIRST thing they would do is copy all that data on their personal portable SSDs. It’s just too tempting not to. I’m genuinely surprised they haven’t shown up on the dark web yet.

  25. A jaw-dropping lapse in judgement by the Trump Admin.

For context, there are 330 million Americans, and a total of 450 million social security numbers ever issued.

That’s Two-thirds of all SSNs issued or 90% of Americans today.

  26. Fitting name for the whistleblower, as it sounds like something out of a JLB tale about some imaginary dystopian land in which the people's identities are malleable and subject to the whims of the king.

  27. Does this mean we are all going to get letters from the federal government saying our private data may have been exposed, or something to that effect, and offering US all a free year of credit monitoring 🤦🏼‍♀️

    2
  28. "over 300 million Americans" so, almost all of us.

Fuck this oligarchic evil regime on all fronts. And with extreme prejudice.

  29. so this sucks but anyone with half a clue has been urging ditching SSNs as secure personal identifiers since... idk, the 1980s?

The military hasn't used SSNs as secure personal identifiers for decades, for example.

  30. I would guess that Russia is interested in our Social Security numbers. They can hack and make it seem like voters are voting twice. Maybe Russia will mail in fake ballots, causing the votes to be thrown out. Putin told Trump not to trust mail in ballots. States better pay attention.

  31. Don't worry, it is already in NK hands and will be available on the dark web for the special labor day sale. Rest assured, the NG is picking up litter while the oligarchs rob us blind. They'll sell us a new subscription to super protect our data for $100 a year. (subject to arbitration)

  32. Didn't the supreme court already rule that this type of thing is fine & dandy?

    1
  33. And now Elon Musk and all his buddies have private copies. 💯

That’s why you have the auditing they demanded turned off—to prevent this.

  34. ... the cloud environment appeared to be set up for DOGE-affiliated Social Security staffers, but it "lacks independent security, monitoring and oversight." She said Borges "has serious concerns about the vulnerability it causes for nearly everv American's data."

  35. Here's a link to thread on this story that includes gift links to the NYT and WaPo articles which have a lot of details. Even names the DOGE kid who was involved (It was BIG BALLS)

  36. Will even ONE journalist ask the WH about this? Will they ask derps on the Sunday shows for a comment?

I guess it doesn't matter. They'll say it was Biden's fault or "fake news" or "I haven't read that yet" while running towards an elevator

  37. Maybe not a likely outcome, but if Trump and/or Musk misused government data and it can be proven it would be pretty hilarious to watch one or both have their fortunes vaporized by the largest class action lawsuit in history.

  38. If I have to apply for a new SSN and passport and anything associated with my SSN I will campaign to make sure every GOP elected official who sat by and let this happen never holds an elected office again. Even dog catcher

  39. The white house is busy now Pooh-poohing this latest concern. They are in effect saying there's nothing to see here. Americans your data may or may not be safe.

  40. That’s so messed up. Thx trump for spending our money on waste, fraud and abuse.

  41. In plenty of companies, sending just one customer record to any address outside of the company and trusted partners would be picked up by IT and you'd be suspended within 15 minutes and your contract terminated soon after. Government agencies seem incredibly sloppy by comparison.

  42. I have another worry about Musk and his minions from DOGE. They were loading up data from secure servers onto their own servers and hard drives. Does anyone know where those devices are now?

    0
  43. Didn’t a SCOTUS rule allow this access from DOGE too? Seems lots of people should be held responsible for this.

  44. Any other Administration would be crippled. The Very Special Boy is allowed play with your Social Security.

  45. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ALLOW THE KETAMINE ADDLED SELF-IMPORTANT BLOVIATOR MUSK UNCHECKED ACCESS. IF YOUR FICO SCORES ARE UNDERGOING INEXPLICABLE WILD SWINGS LATELY I'M CONVINCED THIS IS THE REASON.
