Good piece. The BBC quote you criticise was a much more defensible downscaling of an earlier loose exaggeration. Essex police gave 2000, once, as the peak in Epping. The corrected version seems defensible. The initial version fits your argument
No media org appears better placed than the BBC to use its national & local reach to give an accurate report of "how big are these protests" [numerically] which would seem one useful foundation for hearing from those on them & analysing their meaning. But this report gets the estimates/range wrong
