I mean I like political intrigue. I just think it’s hard to keep that contained inside a 2-3 hour movie and keep it interesting or well paced. GoT has the advantage of being a tv series with plot lines you can jump to every week to keep things fresh.

I remember liking God Emperor for its crazy opening scene and its penchant for philosphizing. But I admit I haven’t gotten there in my reread yet (currently finishing Children). So we’ll see where it falls. Been probably 10 years since I’ve read it, maybe more.

For me anyway, the sequel series is the best when taken as a whole. For example, I almost consider Messiah and Children one big book, and I think it’s more interesting that way since it’s like the “aftermath” of the first book. But a single sequel book is not as good as the original.

I’d rank them Dune Children God Emporer Messiah -long pause- Heretics Chapterhouse
The first is by far the best and the best plotted. I agree its ideas are the weakest, and imo 2 is the most interesting thematically and from a world building standpoint but the least from a plot standpoint.

I think the big issue is Alia is so central to Messiah and not in the first two movies at all, they’ll have to setup how that all works. Just a lot of exposition to cover really.

I do. Originally I was not as worried but after rereading it it’s mostly political intrigue. Which tbh I like (in a book) but i fear it makes for a boring movie. But agree the first half will be jihad, which isn’t actually in the book at all just mentioned as having happened lol.

The fun thing about this tho is the battles in the Duneiverse is not the fighting but the dialogue. The dialogue is the battle.
-
The next Dune film is gonna be weird though, even with all the implied action I’m not sure there is enough for a movie that doesn’t bore half the audience to death with dialogue. I obviously would be happy with 2 hours of Scytale and Edric exchanging barbs while plotting a conspiracy.

It’s just funny rereading all these years later after we got some movies, because to me the movies really feel like the filler content we never got described in the books lol (also complimentary).

I say this not as a hater, but as a lover. He has his priorities, he’s much more interested in having characters talk about their predicaments than showing people fighting each other.
