All through Mason & Dixon, the boys are worried that they're the puppets for some shadowy conspiracy or another (Freemasons, Jesuits, British King, Penn family, etc.) and in the end Dixon works out they were just working for the abstract concept Slavery, every single thing they did. That's it! Oops!
