They've been marketing towards age groups for decades before the naming started. I think it's more that labeling started & everything needed a label. I dislike labels, but they're everywhere on everything.

Well, I agree with Jonathan. Those born between those years are much closer to those born into the next generation (why do we have to name generations??), than they are to the actual after WWII babies.
