Worse than that. Orban is subtle in comparison.

That was a long time coming. Critical change is post-Bork, Reps really learned the art of managing confirmation hearings & the appointment process.

I am deeply grateful that I retired from teaching modern US history in 2013. None of what I thought to be the case, & taught, makes any sense now. I did emphasise the Southernization of US politics, the Powell memo & March to the Right since the early 70s, & the abortion issue/Christian right, tho.

Coverage doesn’t surprise me. It’s very televisual news, has been for years (Mediterranean migration crisis before ours began); politicians, not just Farage, have focused on it as an issue; goes along with “broken Britain” narrative — govts are **** at doing things; & Brekshit “take back control”…

Prof. Badwin ought to be told, so that he can do his worst to take it out of the dear old place because they refused him a scholarship (I sincerely hope) when given the chance, years ago. Don’t tell me he ever darkened the doors, please.

1/ Michael Gove reshaped English education more than any minister since 1944. His reforms continue to structure the present despite many changes of Government. A thread.

Oxbridge understands this. My old u’grad college used to admit 8 students a year to study Modern History in the 1960s. Still, I think, does. Nuffield still has 50-odd students. All of the growth is in postgrads, overseas students, research fellows, etc. Home u’grads are a necessary loss leader.
