Fort Bliss was named to honor Lt. Col. William Wallace Smith Bliss, a veteran of the Mexican War and the son-in-law of President Zachary Taylor. The military post was established in the El Paso area in 1854 and officially renamed Fort Bliss on March 8 of that year to commemorate his service.
