oh yeah it’s totally a distribution thing too, just look at how 7/11 operates in japan vs the USA. it’s much easier to handle distribution when you don’t have to ever cross state lines and you’re working in a significantly smaller area

i think it also has to do with americans having no problem destroying public property, not saying japan is perfect in regards to this but publicly accessible spaces in america tend to get vandalized
