Unbelievable and a totemic loss. For years I've had less and less advice to give to young writers who ask about careers as professional (i.e., paid) film critics. At this point, with very few exceptions, the profession as such is dead.

Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips announces he has taken a buyout and the Trib is eliminating his post. Unless I am missing someone I believe this leaves the nation's third-largest city without a single full-time film writing gig.

  1. I once looked up to you and Wesley at the Globe. I had many discussions at the college newspaper about your writing and reviews and thoughts), and I’m saddened that so few people will get this kind of experience and fewer will be able to write critically like you two did. It meant a lot.
