When government breaks down in non disaster/war settings, the reprocussions take a long time to be felt by average Joe white bread (me). But by the time they do, and things start breaking, smog rolling in, kids sick with no vaçcines....its to late to make any quick course corrections.

I look at the students fighting Jim Crow in the 1950s and 60s and how tough they had it...and thanks to their sacrifice and persistence how easy we have had it....and I just hope my generation (x) didn't blow it. We got soft, forgot the hard lessons that were learned. Hopefully not too late.

The concept of community support is nice and very effective in some situations but it can't be scaled up or mobilized quickly for a Sandy or California fires situation.

Life can be a cruel, hard, dark place when you are on your own. Its sad to see so many people ignore the essential services only the government can provide. Doesn't matter if its a community devastated or an individual in crisis, there should be government services there for support.
