Ugh. We have some of these fortress-like, SFH-where-there-should-be-10 monstrosities in Chicago, too. The architecture is just so transparently "we're here to extract from the neighborhood & contribute nothing" w/ the blank wall at ground level. Wouldn't want to accidentally interact with the peons.
