I for one am glad to know that a guy who last took a science class in high school in the 1950s is now in charge of all scientific research grants in this country.

When my folks were first married and living on limited means, my mom used most their budget to buy a set of Corelle bowls. When dad got home she proudly announced that they were shatterproof, and demonstrated this by dropping the whole set on the floor in one stack, shattering all of them.

I’m reading Nero Wolfe books lately, and among all the obsolete tech and societal changes, the thing that stands out as the biggest difference to today is the tax rates. The narrator Archie always points out that Wolfe’s fees will be whittled down 80% by the govt. Must have been nice.

mRNA vaccines can be modified and produced cheaply and quickly. This doesn't only help us respond to pandemics better, it enables researchers to rapidly test different treatment strategies for many diseases such as cancer. Cutting mRNA funding slows all of health research and makes us all sicker.
