  1. Look, I think the real problem is just not understanding how to adjust for inflation. If we're adjusting from 1925 dollars, these are $500+ shoes. But are they any uglier or less comfortable than many shoes made for women today? As a woman, I don't think so.

  2. Owls in the Family is the only Farley Mowat book I encountered as a kid. I don't know if there are others, but I'll probably look into it when I have a kid of my own! My mom read a couple of his adult books to my family on road trips when I was a kid (like Never Cry Wolf), which I also loved.

  3. Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing by Judy Blume, the Henry series by Beverly Clearly, Owls in the Family by Farley Mowat, basically anything by Dick King-Smith (Three Terrible Trins was a favorite of mine, it miiiiight be too scary for your kid, but I was really easily scared as a kid and I loved it!)

  4. So this hypothetical young man was told in kindergarten, during the 1998/99 school year, that he was racist, sexist, and homophobic? And told by teachers when he was 12, in 2005, that he was trans? Do these people remember what the political and cultural climate of this country was like then?

  5. As a teenager circa 2008, I remember hearing a segment debating debating conversion therapy for trans kids on NPR's Talk of the Nation. And I was like, if I don't believe in this for gay people, why would it make any more sense for trans people? And I think that was the beginning for me.
