  1. 1920s newspaper writing is sublime: "Leon Kauffer, the careless guest who left the be-diamonded apple in a open valise for the modern Eve to find, is now a guest of the police..."

  2. ESPECIALLY if you also risked the Wrath of the Monki by cleaning out his lair. "So that's where my lava lamp was! I haven't seen it in years," says your 21yo.

Photo of a small cubby behind a closet, with the low door open to reveal a stuffed monkey, two lava lamps, an extension cord, an old Dora the Explorer wig, and a sign: Organization of MONKI with a fierce monkey face logo drawn on it. It's probably better if you ask no more questions than I did.

I'm pretty sure it's a rule that if you're the person who takes every single thing out of the large entryway closet, sorts out donations/rubbish/things still wanted, vacuums & organizes everything, then you get to keep the $10.25 in various bills/coinage lurking in the to-be-donated pockets.

  4. 1926 newspaper, on the hurricane: "Miami is smashed, Coral Gables is wrecked, Hollywood is badly hurt, while Fort Lauderdale, Dania and Pofpano are virtually leveled.” Would you [sic] the "Pofpano" or write "Po[m]pano"? I'm not sure readers outside the area would know what "Pofpano" was a typo for.

  5. Meanwhile, here in Maine, AI crawlers have rendered the server that manages our statewide interlibrary loan unreachable by legitimate attempts to pass through requests/information

Again, but louder: the server can’t be reached by libraries and the folks trying to use them BECAUSE OF AI CRAWLERS.

Gavin, you massive disappointment, what are you doing??

(I mean, I know what you're doing, but I need you to stop)

How many educators did you talk to when you made this decision? Oh, none, you say? Ohhhh this is for presidential donations, you say?

  6. Writing is finding glossy pamphlets advertising the allure of Miami in 1926, which inadvertently confusing great fun at the beach with one girl positively decking another. It is trying not to laugh. And failing all afternoon.

A full-color 1920s illustration of Miami details. An art deco border in blues shows a cityscape, a yacht, and water along the bottom of the frame. A large centered picture of a beach with palm trees prominently features two young women playing with a beach ball, who inadvertently (?) look like one is punching the other to take the ball away. A giant marlon, and small images of a man playing tennis and a woman golfing, form the upper border of the picture.
