I live in the shadow of Mt. St. Helens where I write about cameras and other tech, create YouTube videos, and spend a lot of time out in nature photographing wildlife and the places they live.

  1. Growing up on this farm and working to restore the ecosystem here, I've learned that the best defense against most invasive species is a hands-off approach, as most invasive species can only gain a foothold when given the opportunity by human-origin disturbances.

  2. We used to have a real problem with Canadian Thistle in the upper field outside of the seasonal marsh, but after scything it for a few years it died back significantly, and with fewer grazing animals now it doesn't seem able to compete with native species.

  3. It should be noted that neighboring fields which are regularly mowed and/or heavily grazed are currently dry and do not provide a noticeable cooling effect on the surrounding air like our field. Even during the worst heat wave of drought, our field remains moist and cool.

  4. We have let this field naturally regenerate for decades. Every year the ecosystem becomes increasingly diverse, and the moderating effect on our microclimate increases. In the evening on a hot day like today, it noticeably cools the air.

Want to beat the heat? Protect & restore ecosystems. #wawx

  5. Spent the day shooting a video for an assignment I'm working on, only to find out just now that one camera was filming in the wrong aspect ratio, while the other had fog condensed inside the lens, and I'd somehow missed both issues while filming. All my footage from today is basically trash. Ugh.
