The real point re China is that probably for reasons of loss of face and maintaining the impression of total control it did not come clean about the outbreak - regardless of where Covid came from - a good deal earlier. It was around months before it started to register in Europe.

What I have heard suggests that had the initial lockdown been put in place much earlier it might have spared us the need for them later. As it was it came after the horse had well and truly bolted.

Good piece by Ed Luce, but I disagreed with his use of the word dishonest re the sloppy edit. To me is was an example of lazy journalism when something is taken as read. Someone probably said we need the TV equivalent of an ellipsis here and was told ‘oh come on, we all know what he [Trump] meant.’
