Florida bans the Diary of Anne Frank.

A literary classic that serves as a cautionary tale about the rise of fascism and the importance of documenting atrocities as they’re occurring.

We all must document this time in history. Keep copies. Write everything down.

Make sure that the truth will out.

  1. Censorship isn’t education—it’s erasure. Keep copies, write everything down, and ensure future generations see what’s really happening.

  2. They ban the classic book that shows the tragedy of antisemitism and racism more generally through the words of a young woman. And then they claim that they are fighting antisemitism. Yeah, like the Proud Boys and their hero Trump are!

  3. I remember visiting the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam and crying the whole way through it. You leave through a gift shop, and I bought the Diary again and stuffed the contribution boxes with all the money I had on me. It was painfully moving.

  4. What's the reason for this? I think those who decided this either never read the book or simply don't want to understand the meaning Anne Frank's words. Nazi's banned books too!

  6. Even the part where someone rats them out and the Nazis send them to death camps? Sounds like a text book to me.

  7. There’s only one sort of person who doesn’t want people reading the Diary of Anne Frank. We thought they were defeated in 1945, but they’re creeping out of cracks all over the West.

  8. Like really? Not a hyperbolic extension based on stuff they have banned.? They've banned a book based on the recovered diaries of a girl who died in an extermination camp?

  9. Shocking to the voice of a lived experience of one so young & full of promise in her possession of humane spirit. Who was killed. There should be outrage all over the world.😡

  10. when i was in 5th grade (~14 y/ago) in ultraconservative rural louisiana they had us start reading anne frank for a unit, and then made us randomly stop reading halfway thru and never brought it up again

i found out later that it was because anne frank mentions starting her period later in the book

  11. Unbelievable but not surprising. A party that bangs on about free speech, like all extreme right wing people, mean only for what they want to hear. Why not go the whole hog and emulate 1930's Germany with book burnings? Meanwhile "I love the poorly educated" has gone from mantra to policy.

  12. During WWII, England had diarists, who wrote down history as it happened.

I did it with Covid. I kept 2 years of data on 2 states and 3 counties on spreadsheets to determine mine and my family's safety by tracking increasing or declining outbreaks.

Those sheets are in the safe.

  13. So, when is the media, ordinary people going to come to terms with the truth: Trump, GOP, MAGA are white supremacists. Wake up and stop complying. Demand Impeachment. Constantly Complain make GOP miserable. Only we can end this madness.

  14. I took my preteen to Anne Frank House this year. She read the diary before we went and it moved a deep part of her soul, just like it did for me when I read it at her age.

You do your children no favours trying to destroy evidence of the past.

  15. Probably above DeSantis’ reading level. He probably fears the content because he can’t comprehend it. Doesn’t seem to be a student of history. 😜

  16. The graphic novel was removed / banned maybe while reviewing / in Vero Beach. Not statewide. The original diary remains on the shelves.
Geez, both parties and all media needs to be fact checked.

  17. What does AIPAC say about this? Instead of filling a lawsuit, I'm sure they will be silent as the segregationist bigoted fascist white nationalist Republicans banned the book. They only speak out when they perceive antisemitism is done by a melanin rich person. #RejectGOPFascism #EndGOPFascism

  19. They should instead ban the Bible. It’s a science-fiction piece of crap loaded with lies+hate, started many wars and killed+tortured so many ppl in the name of “God”..Yes ban the Bible not the journal of a frightened but damn brave girl who just wrote the truth of what she was seeing hearing+living..

  20. Teach the unabridged version in response.

Make it a lesson in what she lived. Assign acquiring it without a single other adult finding out they have it.

That's a tiny way of learning it.

  21. Bible verse of the day.

Shouldn’t Republicans ban this book like other books are being banned or challenged for sexual content, or claims of it being sexually explicit?

  22. If it harms the image of fascists it has to be banned no one ever said but they banned it nonetheless because too many people correspond with what Anne Franks went thru then is happening now in the United States of America.

  23. I just finished (5 min ago) a novel called the Collector of Burned Books. There was a real-life Library of Burned Books in Paris which only contained books that Nazis had banned/burned. Until the Nazis occupied Paris, of course. But thinking those types of libraries would be useful now.

  25. De Satan spews sh*t and children will learn from PragerU. Florida public schools have been in constant decline for a very long time. It wasn't always like this.

  26. to get it, you can just place an order in a free country for delivery by mentionning that it's a Mein Kampf copy. it's seem US is no longer the land of the free... I know, I'm sarcastic.

  27. Isn’t that anti-semitic? Trump punishes universities for being anti-Semitic. Punish Florida trump.

  28. Dear Kitty, Nazi's are back!!! This time in a country far from Amsterdam, but Nazi's they are. Just like their fellow Nazi's in '40-'45 are they deporting people they don't like.

Hope this will not end like I did.... murdered in concentration camp Bergen Belsen.

    Love Anne.

  29. This is not true, it’s misinformation circulating on fb posts. Versions of it were pulled for “review” in 2023-24 in specific districts but are back on shelves. This is absolutely not in defense of Florida or their major role in book censorship

  30. I thought their book ban was barred. Regardless what the actual fuck. Who bans this? The willful desire to commit the same atrocities in our government is absolutly vile. Because that is the only reason you ban that. You want to repeat it.

  31. Your post is manipulative and hysterical, why don't you put more effort into your future reporting?

  37. Can't have people reading people's lives who are victims of genocide. They might start questioning what is happening in Palestine.

  38. I agree Fascism is completely on the rise, however, this is a bit misleading. They banned a graphic novel based on “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl”. The original is still in circulation. But I’m sure it’s in the Moms for liberty’s scopes.

  39. WTF!!! I've heard people say that she was captured by foreign invaders. Yep, true. But, it was local Dutch informers who enabled her captors. Something like the Republicans in Congress are enabling the Fascist/Nazis in Trumpland now.

  40. Exactly, eventually someone's defense to all this is going to be that it never really happened.

  42. When I hear people talk about how books can create empathy, I think of this book. I remember reading it and thinking "this girl is just like me." It was profound to me as a kid.

  43. From what I can see, the ban applied to a graphic-novel adaptation of the Anne Frank story, not the original book.

Still, that a state is banning books at all is a sign that it's in a seriously bad way. Reports are a federal judge has struck down the state law, so the book may be reprieved?

  44. And this is NOT antisemitism? The faux outrage this administration is using to gut higher learning. Warning to zionists, you are on his list right after the Latinos and Blacks.

  45. Florida sucks enough that we don’t have to tell half truths.

A school district banned an “illustrated version” of the diary because it made light of the Holocaust (but also on parents complaints the version had LGBTQ material 😒).

    www.usatoday.com/story/entert...

The school district has created a procedure for reviewing books that receive complaints. The School Board has the final say.

  47. If I was a blue State, I'd offer teaching jobs to any teachers who get fired in Red States for teaching banned books in their classrooms.

  48. I’m currently re-reading it. It’s sobering to me how Anne’s parents had her continue her school studies and plan for the future. We humans are interminably hopeful.

  49. Not quite true. They have pulled a graphic version but not the original. They were removed for reviews

  50. Banned books, nah, just hit google on any or all banned books and you have it at your fingertips for free. Not how it should be, but we have to still provide folk with a way to skirt the facists and read the forbidden texts. Yes?
