Former tech drone, living in L.A. I now create digital reconstructions of ancient Greek and Roman sculpture. No, really. 🏳️‍🌈

  1. We found other copies of that ‘ancient glass portrait’ in three different museums in the U.S. and Europe, all obviously fakes. And we contacted the museums in question and presented the clear evidence of forgery, but never received responses. Ah, well …

  2. Yes, and it’s embarrassing when authorities earnestly pronounce that they’ve seized looted, when it’s painfully obvious that they’re fake. Then those fakes go directly into a public collection … or are quietly sealed into boxes and stored away, never seen again.

From the other site … 😂

  3. I really don’t think it can be legit. It follows the design of the famous kylix too closely, and the work on the platter is weird and sloppy - there’s no comparanda (something from the same time period/location to compare it to). But I’m no expert - the experts, however, seem to agree.

  4. I’ve watched the same lack of common sense occur in a few different countries, all tied to nationalism. This is certainly not new - the history of archaeology is filled with these kinds of embarrassing occurrences. But it does explain why nothing has been apparently published about this platter.

  5. My alarm bells have been going off about this gold platter. It’s too close to the famous kylix, and my immediate reaction was that it was a forgery. Experts have chimed in and agree that it’s highly suspicious. The style is also odd. In Greece, experts are frequently seizing forgeries as authentic.

  6. Yes, a few of us have had a great deal of fun with announcements for some of the ‘confiscated antiquities’ from Greece, where they’re obvious and poorly made forgeries. I was hoping that experts like you would chime in on this gold platter, which the museum seems to be featuring in a big way.
