In my experience, the WTC attack was the beginning of the undeniable increase in concern for strangers here. Always there, but magnified immeasurably since the shared trauma.

I've lived downtown forever near Holland Tunnel approach. The traffic reduction has been life-changing. But here come the self-driving cars. After all, somebody has to thin the herd.

A Canada goose pair made their home in a flowerbox at the river end of Pier 25 in the '00s. No amount of close scrutiny ruffled their feathers even when she was sitting on eggs or training the gorgeous chartreuse goslings. Even strangers were instinctively protective.

The last time I was afraid on Manhattan streets was when all I knew about them was what I saw on local tv news—mid-'70s, traveled by taxi. Soon as I started walking downtown, woman alone, all hours, I discovered only cool adventures, no trouble ever, not once.

Somebody I know never married because she'd have to give up her rent-controlled closet, and where would she live after they broke up? Near 90, still there, contentedly alone, best friends are exes and their wives.
