We released it at the same time as the NS coverage. It was the first media to cover it. Now, obviously, it is available to anyone who cares enough to read it.

Several of my great new colleagues at @sotonpolitics.bsky.social and their collaborators have to put together this blockbuster paper on what happened when the UK Labour Party adopted radical right rhetoric on immigration. A must read for centre left parties across Europe.
Radical right accommodation really does not work.
New paper out with this exceptionally talented team @katharinalawall.bsky.social @robjohns75.bsky.social @drjennings.bsky.social @sarahobolt.bsky.social @zachdickson.bsky.social @danjdevine.bsky.social & @jack-bailey.co.uk

I'm unsure how it's a successful strategy, but it's nice to hear how people interpret findings differently.

This is true. I think in the case of Labour it's been tried. Ed Miliband had 'controls on immigration' printed on mugs and that was a decade ago. This isn't new, albeit with more fiery language.

Great paper from an outstanding team — syllabi are gonna need to be updated around the world because of this one
We have a paper on how Labour's strategy is disastrous.

This really cracked me up

The particular anti-immigration position is clearly a strategy, even if the particular words weren't.
-
Thanks, but just to say that we don't say it increased support for right-wing parties. It reduced support for Labour. It probably had not much effect on Reform, it just didn't harm them.

Can't disagree with that review, to be fair.

It’s official - “Nigel Farage is right, don’t vote for him” is a demonstrably awful strategy for Labour. Boosts salience of immigration, costs votes on the left, doesn’t persuade any voters on right (why would they accept a crap knock-off when they can have the original?)
