No, LLMs probably do not "imagine things" in the way we do, but it certainly is capable of creating novel imagery, music, and words. How that is distinct from the human process of imagination is deeply unclear. It's an uncomfortable question because we genuinely don't know the answer.

Ironically, LLMs are less capable of logical coherence in their "thoughts" than people, despite ultimately being software, which is built on logic.

Typically, what they produce is unimaginative even when it is bizarre, because it relies so heavily on pattern recognition with respect to existing creative products. But if you examine it for internal consistency, it is hard to see any ideas.

the problem with that is there have been papers studying LLMs, and concluding with a large degree of certainty that LLM outputs don't follow logical processes. there is no "thought process" to analyze.
