  2. The brand new kindergarten special needs teacher at my daughter's elementary school just quit right before school started. They were already down something like 3 kindergarten special needs teachers.

  3. It’s okay though because they aren’t real American jobs like coal miners who eat red meat and pump red blood through their hearts pump pump pump. Just woke communist liberal squishes teaching at university who deserve to starve.

  4. Coal Mining is one of those things yuppie pricks kinda fetishize. Nothing they'd ever actually do, but kinda a hard visably dangerous job they can call everyone else a pussy for not doing. Except they are a pencil pusher themselves

    But Wait !!!

    There is more !!!

Loss of 60,000 academic jobs means we loose jobs where people don't get black lung disease !!

  6. There is an almost Afghanistan Taliban vibe developing in American government today. Not as blatant? It's of growing concern. The reclining Buddha statues. That demolision triggered anti Taliban stories. Mount Rushmore may face something similar. At what point will democracy need rescue & who by?

  7. It must be hard for the Federal Reserve to maximise employment when there are people who add exceptions. Employment is a good thing, unless it’s a Higher Ed job or a USAID job, or an environment related job, or any public service job, etc. How about we just agree that a good job is good.

  8. There are as many coal miners in the entire country as there are employees at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Not across the entire nationwide Mayo network of hospitals and clinics. Just in one city of 123,000.

  9. Foreign students are often wealthy because living and going to school here ain't cheap. An acquaintance recently had a garage sale for a foreign student who decided to leave the US after the Spring semester. Everything they left behind was high end. That economic boost is gone now--plus brain drain.

  10. Before you criticize, it’s important to remember how common black lung is in the academic world. Were these jobs worth saving?

  11. A thought: Cities & college towns tend to vote blue. So no one is recruiting their votes - it's mostly a given.

Votes from rural areas literally count more thanks to the Electoral College.

So even aside from all the masculine coded/machismo stuff, politicians care less about academia.

  12. Plan is to send academics to the countryside to disassemble windmills and mine coal when they’re not working on backyard steel production and collective farming for capitalism

  13. Ah but you see coal miners are Real Americans From the Heartland who we should all put first in every decision, while academics are the Coastal Liberal Elite who are so woke they should be stripped of citizenship. So it's all good!

  15. When I was running EducationUSA programs (the State Department’s major promotional arm for international students) overseas, the number was topping out at over 600K—any idea what it is now?

  16. Yes but consider that Republicans like coal mining jobs because they kill the planet and the coal miners and hate academic jobs because they pay nerds to think

  17. A fun reminder that a loss of 60,000 jobs in and around academia is ~50% more than all coal mining jobs in the entire country.

  18. During the Brexit campaign, there was much talk about the UK fishing industry. The UK fishing industry contributes less to the economy than Games Workshop (you know, plastic figures, Warhammer).

  19. There's a small Catholic college near me that's absolutely cooked if it loses international students. And there must be hundreds of schools like it. How long will it take for the flies to start dropping?

  20. I still say we should be seeing 100% loss of international students.....this also ignores the new rules on student loans, and how many local students won't be able to go to college

  21. Higher education is a fantastic export earner, ie it brings in foreign money. If Trump's so concerned about trade balances, someone should explain this to him. This is "cutting off your nose to spite your face" stuff.
