Do we know if this research will be picked up elsewhere in a way that will not interrupt it too much? Or is it going to be dead in the water for at least a while? Such a shitty (albeit not unexpected) decision.

The Boards. Look at the composition of the Boards of all capitulating institutions and you will see. They have largely been responsible for universities becoming real estate profit centres that are disconnected from the mission of higher education.
