  1. I used Linux Mint initially because Blender and Godot worked faster in it, now I find it a lot more comfortable than windows for anything. It boots in like 1/3 of the time.

Seriously, Linux gaming is pretty dope now. Fedora is my recommendation if you don't want to do much OOTB. Just swap your video card for AMD and it's great

  3. The media computer in my living room is running Linux Mint DE specifically because it's an easy setup. I got a decade old computer at a swap meet, etched the 64-bit installer onto a flashdrive, and it was pretty smooth sailing from there. Using command line for anything is shockingly rare.

  4. Gotta love it when my schizotypal paranoia pays off later down the line. My brain started melting during the George Floyd riots regarding data tracking so I started changing things then.

Not that I'm any kind of expert but it's nice that I don't have to deal with more invasive ai.

Pick up something user friendly like Linux Mint or Ubuntu and you'll have a pretty decent time.

It'll occasionally be frustrating, sometimes a bit more depending on how rare your hardware is, but man. Not many surprises at least.

  6. There's also kagi, which is a paid search engine, but they also have a browser like DDG. Feels like maybe giving them money makes them less likely to still snarf your data. For browser I'm still just dailying firefox.

  7. Linux sucks too, but it sucks exactly how much and in the exact way you want it to.

No one else is insisting that you want it to suck in all these new, unnecessary ways, force it on you and then make it impossible to disable without fucking with your registry or using dodgy Albanian warez.

  8. Took the plunge four months ago and it's really not too bad. The crazy nerd shit is there if you want it, but day to day use there is little functional difference. Except Linux isn't forcing ai bullshit on you and half the os is not adware.

  9. Linux has been really good for quite a long time now. I just install stock Ubuntu and don't really fuck with it, and I basically have zero issues.

  10. Just install Linux Mint or Kubuntu. Both have Windows like interfaces, are very stable and good support.

I personally have set two people up with Kubuntu who just didn’t want windows anymore and are not tech people and they have loved it.

  11. Speaking as somebody who did a lot of head-banging against Linux and the 90s and 00's, it's a totally different experience today. The modern Linux GUI is intuitive to any Windows or Mac user, most of our apps are in the browser, and it's quite rare to go near the command line if you don't want to.

  12. Do it now. It's easy. And you lose the revolving software zombie subscriptions in the process.

When you're done,It's kinda like your computing life just took a days-late dump.

    Do it.

  13. I partitioned my hard drive and installed Linux Mint. It's very easy!! It's not a steep learning curve. As you fart with the desktop you can slowly learn the operating language.

Of course Mint isn't as polished as Windows but at least I don't have my computer taking pics every five minutes UGH

  14. linux has come a LONG way since anyone tried it back in the day. so much is done via the web or as web based apps that you don't really experience a gap in functionality anymore either

good luck if you try it!

  15. Just searched DuckDuckGo to see if anybody else is commenting, and I'm thinking the same thing! I began using it last month, and I'm preferring it to Chrome! Kind of like switching from Twitter to Bluesky.

  17. Linux has treated me well for work. Though I haven't tried gaming on it other than the SteamDeck. Would be nice to be able to install that on a gaming PC

  18. system 76 has computers that just work and you can get popos preinstalled and that just works and its customer support actually works; as someone who doesn't want to actually fuss with a computer to make it do simple things, it was a good option for me.

  19. this is a little known game mechanic but if you walk into the middle of a city in the pnw with a megaphone and announce you need help setting up linux, a handful of queer furries will spawn and install arch on your machine and give you the tl;dr + raid your pantry for snack food as payment
