  1. We laid out the rationale for a RC in an open letter earlier this year, a letter that was supported by about 100 academic and non-academic co-signatories.

Canada thrived within a U.S.-led liberal international order after the Second World War, but that era is over. Our economic and security policies must evolve to meet modern threats.

  2. Absolutely, 100% correct. The USMCA was a dead letter the moment Trump threatened tariffs against Mexico & Canada. Carney and the Liberals have wasted the past 10 months pursuing comprehensive agreements and a degree of certainty that simply were never, ever, ever on the table. Time for Plan B.

The trade deal’s days are numbered, and Canada needs to figure out how to survive without it

Opinion: It’s a fantasy to think the USMCA will survive

  3. "Mexico does what we tell them to do, and Canada does what we tell them to do."

Being upset or even surprised is a waste of energy.

Reminder that a Royal Commission could be working on proposals for a long-term nation-building strategy right now.

The “we don’t have time for this” never convinced.

  4. This "reflexive selfishness" is a much broader phenomenon, not only confined to conservatism. It's partly an ideational legacy of the political order Thatcher, Reagan, Mulroney and Kohl created. 1/2

During Covid, this was true. Since Covid, even more true. It’s a reflexive selfishness, a rejection of the social compact, of shared community and purpose, of citizenry, and often of reality.

  5. Not only common sense, but - really - also rather low hanging fruit:

A comparatively minor regulatory policy change with the potential to significantly improve road safety.

The FCM or AMO should try to coordinate and support such efforts across the country/province.

“It’s every light & every corner & every time a car almost turns into you — it’s really scary & it’s just time to consider something a little bit radical to save people from getting hurt … It shouldn’t take another fatality to motivate change.”

It’s not radical at all. It’s actually common sense.
