Asylum seekers with the right to work account for less than 8pc of those in accommodation, unless I’ve misunderstood something (8,500 currently have work visas, according to the Home Office)

The government plans to remove technical statutory basis for asylum seeker support.

Govt says it want asylum seekers to work if they are allowed to. Their policy is asylum seekers can't work (but some can after 12 months).

Govt don't plan to let asylum seekers work once case is 6 months old

  1. It's difficult for asylum seekers to work when on asylum support. Income deducted pound for pound from support so if earn more than support and housing costs lose their housing but no access to in work benefits to help pay high private rents and not eligible for council housing.

  2. All the asylum seekers i have ever met over the last 35 years have wanted to work. Many have gone on to significant jobs once they got recognised qualifications. They have get up and go - that is why they have got up and gone.

  3. She explained it this morning on Laura K, and repeatedly said the numbers are small (and didn’t imply increasing them) - but essentially it’s about the statutory requirement to provide being flexed, because we have work conditions for British citizens and she wants to even up when right is given.

  4. Is there any particular reason why every response to “illegal immigration” the government comes up with is another punitive action directed at legal migrants?

  5. The fact when going through the asylum process you cannot work is just the stupidest thing in the universe, especially as for most asylum seekers this is a temporary stepping stone into integration. But right off the bat we push them into illegal employment, as you cannot live on the allowance.

  6. If you want more significant numbers of asylum seekers to work and find their own housing, rather than rely on statutory asylum provision, then you presumably need to…allow them to work? What am I missing

  7. The fact that we're making up new rules for a material number of people expected to still be asylum seeking after a full year encapsulates how we're focussing on the wrong problem.
