From rural Australia, and all that implies. Absolute nerd. I like games and playing them. Also books and reading them.

I thought it was a ban on gunpowder.

I think that's the crux of it. It makes being vulnerable at all prohibitively risky. I don't just mean, like, opening yourself up to friendship - even acquaintanceship requires some amount of vulnerability, obviously far less, but it's still there!

I spend three campaign arcs attuned to this blade, three whole arcs I tell ya! And one day he tells me he's not really a broadsword, never has been. I say that's great, congratulations, but what am I gonna do with the XP I spent on the two-handed weapon feat? I get no respec, absolutely no respec!
My sentient enchanted sword came out to me as transmasc. Talk about Un-She/They-ing your blade! I told him "I don't care how you identify, I just need you to he/it whatever is in front of me!"

Chickenpox infests the body after "immunity" is achieved, becoming shingles as soon as the immune system is compromised. Measles does to the immune system what magnets do to a hard drive. COVID fucks up your nerves.
The reward for surviving disease is not strength, it's weakness.
Would that work?
