It's one of my earliest "event" memories. And I felt great about it. I looked at the TV and fully understood, adults lie.

No one called it "the reconciliation monument." These are neo-, Confederates making excuses for actual Confederates. It's better than neo-Nazis, but that's a very slim distinction.
I'm all for this living rent free in his head. It occupies brain cycles that inadvertently could stop something really horrible.
There are other things. Indictments and convictions may not "remove" them from the bench, but they're not going to hear any cases on Cell Block B.

The Midwest is very different from place to place. The cities are like most cities, people move in, out, around, no big deal, but you move out to the sticks, you are an outsider, and acceptance takes decades. Flyover country is not a simple place.
