The real question is why are 9th and 10th graders being picked up by their parents?
I sympathize with your question, but schools are nowadays located far from anything, like mall sites, even in the northeast USA. Bus service often not offered.

How often are schools moving? My hometown high-school is in the exact same spot it's been for the last 70 years, the core of my childhood elementary school is over a century old now.
