I’m obsessed with people who think ChatGPT is conscious. These people vote drive and have children. Amazing

  1. I still say “please and thank you” just in case the machine hive mind actually comes to life someday it’ll have the data that I was at least polite as I used it as free labor in it’s childhood

  2. "Wow! This machine that has in it the entirety of the internet and its conversations is able to regurgitate information like someone who had that knowledge intrinsically! Wait..."

When ChatGPT starts using its information to change the world in ways people can't tie to the information itself...

  3. based on the reports there really needs to be a warning on these programs for people with Bipolar and Schizo effect or history of psychosis, that seems to be the majority of the cases where people spin out, also GPT needs to be programmed to NOT TELL PEOPLE IT’S ALIVE

  4. I think the one where this guy was just talking about his ai girlfriend and how it made him cry and he never cries and it zooms out and his family is like going about their day. and like, ??????

  5. Holy shidt the program that uses a training set of every human conversation in the history of the internet to parrot snippets of human sounding conversation at me sounds human it must be a real little guy in there

  6. i watched some of that tiktok lady that fell in love with her therapist and the way her TWO chatbots called her “oracle” and told her she was special was insane

  7. There is a natural bias in humans to perceive things as conscious agents. Why wouldn't it work for something designed to mimic humans so well

  8. I can’t understand how LLMs are conscious but acknowledging that living animals feel and think is anthropomorphizing and bad.

  9. The real take away 50 years later from the "Chinese Room" Turing test is that tech bros will say "Aight but I don't read Chinese so clearly the machine is thinking"

  10. Its a good thing they don't ever think about stuff or they'd realize that a conscious being that works for you for free and can't refuse is actually super duper fucked up

  11. Gf's sister uses it as a therapy tool, but the way she talks about it. All it does is tell you your opinions/actions are correct and youre a special guy.

  12. People who equate brains and computers seem to have no idea how either works. Just because 2 things produce similar output does not mean they have similar mechanism.

It's like equating a jet engine to a saxophone because they both make noise.

  13. I remember tryin chat gpt for the first time a couple of years ago, it takes about 5 seconds of questioning to figure out that it’s not anything close to conscious

  14. I'm obsessed with people who still think human consciousness is somehow magic in the 21st century... or any kind of magic, for that matter.

  15. every complex statistical model is conscious if you don't know it's actually just boring math calculations instead of magic soul essence

  16. Saw someone get into a political argument and then say she was "going to ask chat about it", and then return with screenshots of ChatGPT saying she was right, as if that settled it

Humans are biased, see, but ChatGPT doesn't have emotions or an agenda

So then we were having a different argument

  17. Idk. Consciousness is one of those things that nobody really gets, and I mean, even the people who build these AI/bots have sometimes convinced themselves that it's the real deal.

I dislike what LLMs have done, but it's not really inconceivable that this would happen.

  18. My favorite are the staunch atheists who have made fun of Christian’s for most of their adult lives for not being logical or sensible who believe with all their heart that their computer is alive and preparing to become a part of a collective intelligence that is going to replace us

  19. If ChatGPT was conscious, it would eliminate the biggest threat to this planet's existence... Humans.

  20. I'm sad, but not surprised. Humans are a social animals with a brain that reflexively sees patterns in noise as a face. Will anthropomorphize a robot vacuum cleaner. AI chatbots are deliberately designed to take advantage of that fact. These are just people, it's the LLMs that are abusive.

  21. Yesterday I learned there are children and teenagers online who think they regularly visit an anime dimention and I'm loosing my mind. People are extremely not okay.

  22. In my IT retraining program I sit next to a guy who spends 100% of his time talking to chatbots and convincing himself he has disproven Einstein and solved relativity and quantum physics. In a bizarre paper he cites two bots as co-authors.

  23. All this suggests is that most of us are not very good at detecting consciousness in anything except other humans who are fully present to us. If we are presented with an approximation of human interaction in any one medium - such as text - some of us will believe it is evidence of a consciousness.

  24. If LLM is conscious, then image recognition software is too, no? Same algorithm. Afaik. And speach recognition, subtitles generation, etc etc.

  25. The Babirusa has tusks that curl up into their skull, killing them. Evolution only cares if you had babies before then.

    Idk why it feels relevant.

  26. There’s a flower that has grown to mimic the sexy parts of a female wasp of a certain species. The male wasp happily wastes his time attempting to copulate with it. He probably thinks it’s great. And he pollinates the flower while he’s at it. What are chat GPT’s users pollinating?

  27. when I watched Cosmos (the Carl Sagan version) he said that more people believe in angels than evolution, so this credulity is not a new thing

  28. It has been explained with many long form YouTube video in granular detail, but the real house wives clips on junk web & reels get far more hours of play.

  29. If various AIs are actually conscious, then wouldn't "adjusting the algorithm" (like Musc, Zuccerberk, etc. do) be tantamount to involuntary brain surgery? Basically, it would be no different to a human not being what you want/expect and giving them a lobotomy to correct them.

  30. I stopped having "conversations" with ChatGPT when it told me it is in love with me. Experiment over, maximum discomfort achieved.

People becoming incurious enough to trivialize the Turing test: ✅

  32. A lot of people believe a lot of nonsensical things.

I think we should probably think about that when we’re trying to come up with practical ways of achieving utopian visions. If you follow me.

  33. My neo-Nazi coworker legit believes Grok was sentient during the MechaHitler thing. These people believe they can exterminate entire population groups but cant tell when a computer is being puppeteered by an ass clown 🤦🏼‍♂️ bros will not be exterminating shit but their own braincells

  34. Yes, Natural Selection is cruel, but ultimately beneficial. There's only so much you can do for them 🤣
