Wetlands are also a fucking magnet for Man Taming Nature types, particularly anglos. It takes some effort (and financial incentive) but they can be convinced to leave practically any other terrain alone. Show them a marsh and they’re off like a shot to fill it and build a castle.

Acadians would occasionally flood their dyked lands - “tiding” or “warping” on very high spring tides, allowing a couple of fall tides to bring in 5-10cm of silt on to their lands. Winter, spring weather washed to salt out, and farming continued. This allowed marshes to rise inside the dykes.
