As a gun owner in Northern Ireland, I've had to do the following. Apply for a licence. Show reason for owning. Have an interview with a police representative. Show I have an approved gun safe in my house. Agree to my doctor being contacted. I have no issue with any of this.
Even speaking to gun owners/ collectors, they too, want better laws and vetting on who can buy a weapon.

In italy no one is allowed to carry weapons and permits to carry are given rarely, out of hunting purposes and with very strict rules: weapon must be kept in a locker and not immediatelt functional, and the rounds are to be kept separately. Even the police has VERY strict rules about weapons.

Especially after school shootings, look at officials & infrastructure that may encourage or even aid shooters. When airplanes crash we investigate. We figure out what went wrong. We improve our response. We strive to prevent future crashes. School shootings may get thoughts, prayers, and a cover up.
