If someone tells you there's nothing we can do about gun violence beyond thoughts and prayers, remind them:

—Gun laws in other countries have prevented mass shootings —More guns don't make us safer —A majority of Americans want gun reform

We don't have to live like this.

Replies

  1. Our society has turned weapons into toys. We must look at systems that work. Other nations require psychological testing and police to sign off on gun owners. Strict storage and handling rules. Mandatory weeks long gun training and safety classes. They don't have school shootings. Think about that.

  2. All very true. Unfortunately, those with the most ability to do some things about it won't. As long as "Republican" control of the government as a whole, including the courts, continues to exist as is and moves further to darkness, changes will be hard to cone by.

  3. As a gun owner in Northern Ireland, I've had to do the following. Apply for a licence. Show reason for owning. Have an interview with a police representative. Show I have an approved gun safe in my house. Agree to my doctor being contacted. I have no issue with any of this.

  4. In italy no one is allowed to carry weapons and permits to carry are given rarely, out of hunting purposes and with very strict rules: weapon must be kept in a locker and not immediatelt functional, and the rounds are to be kept separately. Even the police has VERY strict rules about weapons.

  5. Just take guns away from republicans. That would make us all safer by far. IMO, only the military should have weapons. Period. People are stupid and predictable. Murphy's law. Humans are inheirently moronic and untrustworthy. Tempers are unpredictable, people with guns usually have trigger tempers.

  6. Especially after school shootings, look at officials & infrastructure that may encourage or even aid shooters. When airplanes crash we investigate. We figure out what went wrong. We improve our response. We strive to prevent future crashes. School shootings may get thoughts, prayers, and a cover up.

  7. We had one school shooting in 1996, hand guns were completely banned as a result and gun laws severely restrict the use of rifles here in the UK. Even air rifles are restricted. We did it.

  8. Also remind them that Republicans passed the Mulford Act in response to the Black Panthers conducting armed patrols of neighborhoods in Oakland. 🤨

  9. How do you propose ending it with 400+ million guns in citzen's hands and a nazi led government? People are tired of this decades old Dem talking point only intended as another stale crumb trail to follow to the polls. Protect oneself and yours is the reality now.

  10. In Canada and elsewhere, we keep the hyper efficient killing machines out of the hands of the public, and confined to the hands of soldiers. Yes, cars and kitchen knives etc can kill people. No, we will not ban cars or kitchen knives. Because they have important uses OTHER than killing people.

  11. I HAVE THOUGHT ON THIS A LOT. I PRETEND I'M ELECTED NEW POTUS. DAY 1 : AMERICA, DEMANDS CHANGE. STARTING TODAY, GUNS ARE ILLEGAL FOR 1 YEAR. WE TRACK CRIME DECREASE.

    • YEAR 2: PERSONAL PROPERTY HOME DEFENSE ONLY...THE WAY THE CONSTITUTION WAS GODDAMN ORIGINALLY WRITTEN.

    END OF HIGH CRIME.

  12. Australia. in the not too distant past, banned all sorts of guns without causing concern. Yes, you can own a gun in Australia, but it is heavily regulated and requires a firearm license.

  13. I'm born and raised in this country. I'm well aware of all of our problems, but these past 7 months have opened my eyes more than ever. Nothing changes for the better and if it does it seems to be short lived. All the progress we've made for equal rights etc they're trying to over turn.

    1
  14. I honestly feel sorry for Americans. The 1st time I ever saw a gun was when I stood behind a police officer. I have sent my kids and grandkids to school knowing they will always be safe. We introduced significant gun laws after our first gun massacre. America only offers thoughts and prayers?

  15. Thugs want loose gun regulations or no gun regulations. People who think sacrificing elementary school children so a thug can have a bump stock is beyond ludicrous, and want gun regulations. It’s just that simple. It’s not about patriotism; it’s about lawless thuggery.

    0
  16. The fact is, if nothing is done, US children will continue to be gun fodder. It's amazing to me that this is just expected, and nothing will be done. Who is next? Because it's only a matter of time until the next incident.

    2
  17. If we treated gun ownership as we do owning a car, it would gradually lower the number of these mass shootings. In my magic world, in order to qualify to purchase ammunition for a weapon, a gun owner should have to present proof that he is state licensed, registered, and insured.

    0
  18. Yeah well, America lost the plot on guns many, many, MANY years ago.

I think y'all have way too much "freedom". If any government were to say "We're taking the guns", there would be instant civil war.

    Bunch of entitled Twits.

    0
  19. The US has the country it wants, it could change it if people really wanted it changed. Here is Canada we have almost zero mass shootings, because of gun control.

    2
  20. And: Children are more important than guns! By a very long way. If you don't think so, you're subhuman and need to be exterminated!

    0
  21. Not buying what you’re selling there. Neither are the tens of millions law-abiding gun owners in the country who do realize guns make them safer. Also when the left uses vague terms like ‘gun reform’ without defining it with specificity we know they’re trying to pull a fast one.

    1
  22. Robert, your “argument” boils down to bumper-sticker slogans that ignore reality.

Other countries don’t have our Constitution, so your comparison is useless.

Cities with the strictest gun laws here are also the most violent—so explain that.

    1
  23. I am currently at my 2nd home in Weimar, Germany. I have been to at least 2 large public functions where there was a small police presence. Not only were none of the citizens armed, but neither is law enforcement!

    0
  24. Until armed federal thugs or right wing militias come to snatch you, your family, your neighbors, etc. to concentration camps for enslavement, deportation, torture, or death. Wake the fuck up. It's already literally happening right in front of your face. Open your damn eyes! 🤦🏻

    0
  25. It’s the mindset that 2A is a god given right. There is no god because what sick deity would allow children’s slaughter? The rights are man made just like the problem is man made. That means we can change this. It’s money, corruption and idiots that impede the solution.

    0
  26. Not to mention the number of victims killed or wounded in churches while literally praying. Obviously only anecdotal, but looks like there’s evidence prayers don’t fxxking work.

    1
  27. Add: Guns are killing our kids, our neighbors, our friends, our family, our lawyers, our doctors, our clergy, our judges, our representatives,,,

    0
  28. In all Societies one of the duties of the parents as well as the other members of Society is to protect the children. So in that regard the U S of A is failing miserably.

    0
  29. The biggest problem is, any half measures will just make things worse. As long as private gun ownership is legal, these things will keep happening - anytime a previously law abiding gun owner gets angry or unstable.

    0
  30. Responsible gun owners have no problem with some restrictions.

Obama passed a law that mentally ill people would not have guns. That was the first thing that Trump rescinded when he came into office. The bill had barely gone into effect.

    0
  31. Just ask them if thoughts & prayers are the answer how come God didnt protect children in GODS HOUSE OF WORSHIP ON THEIR KNEES WORSHIPPING HIM THRU PRAYER? I mean its really not that difficult. Ask them what kind of god kills children in its own house of worship in the middle of prayer?

    0
  32. Americans had gun reform under Clinton and shootings were down. Being bought by the gun lobby has cost us human lives.

    0
  33. A campaign similar to the ones we used to reduce smoking could work in reducing gun violence. More gun/ammunition taxes, more regulation and ad campaigns directed at gun owners.

    0
  34. “There is something deeply hypocritical about praying for a problem you are unwilling to resolve.” -Miroslav Volf

    0
  35. There are already 2 guns for every adult in America… but the gun lobby say the answer to the problem is more guns. Gun violence is preventable, but Americans love their guns so much they couldn’t consider controlling their use/ownership… but ‘Thoughts & Prayers’ will solve it.

    0
  36. We’re the grownups. We have failed our collective children utterly. They won’t look to us for ideals to live by, including hope for a better tomorrow. Sorry kids no hope for you.

    0
  37. Apparently we do. Politicians didn't give a damn after Sandy Hook, they're not going to care now. They are all bought, all in someone's pocket.

    0
  38. The right to bear arms - should not be the right to kill anyone you want.

The government should lead by example.

But wait - they are! Look at ICE!

Trump’s example is fueling the use of force, when you disagree with with him!!!!!!

  39. Another day, another shooting. Children dead and injured. Why is there never enough white-hot burning rage about this? I don't want to hear Democrats telling us that their "hearts go out..." etc, etc, etc. I want to hear them screaming "ENOUGH OF THIS FUCKING SHIT!!!!" at the top of their lungs.

FUCK YOU AND YOUR FUCKING GUNS

  40. 🇨🇦 here 👋🏻 gun laws work and still allows for hunting. No other protection is needed. Generally, we live in peace with some occasional incidents of crime. We feel safe, because our neighbours aren't monsters.

    0
  41. Imagine Republicans making gun laws today. We know who they would take them from, and it would have nothing to do with their propensity for these kinds of tragedies.

    1
  42. There are only two things that will deliver actual gun control to this country:

    1. Mass shootings moving from schools to board rooms; and

    2. Let the KKKristofascists win and establish their PERMANENT KKKristofascist minority rule hegemony and they will quickly move to protect it with gun control.

    0
  43. Hell, a vast majority of Americans don’t even OWN a gun. But gun owners average at least 3-4 guns per owner. And ammo for each one. Cops dont want to knock on doors, and firemen are leery about house fires.

    1
  44. WE NEED A NEW REFORM PARTY! WE NEED TO WRITE A NEW CONSTITUTION THAT INCLUDES EVERYONE FROM THE START, NO EC, MODERN GUN CONTROL, UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE, BANNING NAZIS, ETC. THE USA HAS PROVEN THAT TWO OPPOSING IDEOLOGIES CANNOT CO-EXIST. WE NEED CA WA OR TO SECEDE WITH CANADIAN MEXICAN SUPPORT.

    0
  45. Yes gun reform now! How many deaths of children will it take to get legislation on gun reform ! Have we reached it yet congress?

    0
  46. A lazy electorate pacified by money and stuff, distracted by sports and spectacle, will reap what the fascists sow.

Democracy loving Americans need to strike en masse, and take to the streets, shut the country down…. Because right now, fascism is winning.

    1
  47. If Republicans can launch a 60 year operation to effectively undo precedent (re: Immunity ruling, Chevron overturned, Dobbs), so can Democrats to give the "well-regulated Militia" part a more common sense meaning

    0
  48. Gun laws in our country used to prevent this from happening, but MAGA politicians tore them down. Let’s get back to sanity. 💙🔥😡 #makeamericasaneagain

    0
  49. We don't have to live like this

And thousands will be able to continue to live instead of die by gun violence

    0
  50. Safer? How come a country that allows Trump, a convicted felon, to be President and to lead the country to an authoritarian and self-destructive regime, could be safer with guns? I don’t think the guns are helping… the only purpose of a gun is to harm, to kill other human being.

    0
  51. It’s time to charge senators and Congress members who vote against gun control with manslaughter every time a child is killed.

    0
  52. Australia once held the record for a mass shooting @35 dead in 1996. No mass shootings since as some brave politicians implemented gun laws.

    0
  53. So sickened by another school shooting. I think the dems in congress should introduce gun safety legislation repeatedly to make it obvious that it’s the GOP refusing to move forward with safety measures.

    0
  54. Just because something is true & beneficial to society...doesn't mean it fits with the MAGA playbook.

    0
  55. Yeah. I am old enough to remember when the ban on AR-15 type weapons expired (thank the GOP for that) and gun violence and school shootings went up exponentially. Fucking Republicans and the NRA did this. Throw in many of the shooters being radicalized by trump and here we are.

    0
  56. Someone very wise once said, “ the more guns you have, the more they get fired and the more people seem to get in the way of the bullets!"

    It really isn’t rocket science.

    0
  57. we live in a worsening tyranny; people don't matter. Money matters. That is the US and if people were more honest about how immoral our society is more people might opt to abandon it. Bc there is clearly no fixing a culture dominated by sadistic cruelty.

    0
  58. Trump this week: “I … have … the right to do anything I want to do. I’m the President of the United States.”

    0
  59. Thoughts and prayers are at the essence of Metaphysics. Utilizing these metaphysical practices offer a slight alteration in this physical world of Reality. Altering the physical objects involved, ie guns, is far more effective in reducing gunshot wounds. Try moving or stopping a bullet via mind.

    0
  60. We do have to live like this as long as Congress continues to ignore the will of the people. As long as we have oligarchs we have to live as they dictate

    0
  61. And remind the anti-abortion folks that these are deaths just as real, and much more preventable. If you are prolife, you must be antigun.

    1
  62. Agree with everything but the last point. Americans clearly don’t want gun law reform, as they explicitly vote for politicians who keep the status quo or even expand gun rights further—permitless carry for example.

    0
  63. Lest I remind everyone that when we did have a ban on assault weapons (enacted during the Reagan Administration) we had exceptionally few mass shootings. After Bush lifted it, the nation’s first mass shooting was Columbine and it’s been downhill since then. Do the research.

    0
  64. No you don’t. And there is hard data that proves gun crimes went down in previous times where assault weapons were banned.

The “good guys” with guns aren’t stopping the bad ones from murdering people with their guns. But clearly children are nothing but acceptable losses to those who oppose reform

    1
  65. Switzerland is a good example. Since every army conscript (both male and female) receives his/her gun after their 9 months conscription the number of guns in Switzerland is nearly 80 % of the population. But the bullets or other ammo is kept at secure vaults at the shooting range. NOT AT HOME!

    1
  66. Gun control in America is impossible as long as the NRA keeps handing stuffed envelopes of graft to Republicans while gun companies convince gullible idiots that their entire personality revolves around humping their guns.

    1
  67. The Second Amendment fanatics worship Trump... he gives them carte blanche regarding guns. That won't change until someone actually shoots him.

    0
  68. The sick secret in America is that mass shootings are how those who sell guns & ammo make their money in the wake of an event. They have no incentive to want gun control because, once again, America apparently values profit over people.

    0
  69. And yet when on the phone yesterday with my GOP congressman’s office talking about this he hung up on me because I said shit twice because “cussing” offended him. No, not children being slaughtered, the word “shit” was what offends him the most. I have little hope our country will do anything.

    0
  70. In addition to the long list of gun laws and reforms we need to put in place here is another one; stop making these maniacs famous. Erase them from history. Don’t release their name or picture. Don’t interview their family and neighbors. Send him to El Salvador and forget he ever existed

    0
  71. Democratic leaders throwing trans kids under the bus to get votes but still y’all sticking to this gun grab rhetoric. Ffs guns are the last thing we should be going after with the rise of fascism.

    0
  72. If gun control laws went into effect right now, they would only apply to Trump's political opposition.

Think, people. We are in the middle of an authoritarian coup. There could not be a worse time to be screaming for gun laws- they might just listen to you.

    1
  73. Get united so we can win the general election. Then put REAL gun regulations in place. (Like the majority of Americans want.) So far it’s only gotten worse b/c we never have enough power in Congress for real change. Unite on Democracy!

    0
  74. You're right, it's like trying to mine a new Bitcoin without updating the software – we need to adapt and change the rules to create a safer, more just society.

    0
  75. It's not really a point that merits or necessitates discussion. On one side, you have profit, influence, and power. On the other side, you have a society that is clearly tolerant of the deaths of its children. If society wanted to do different, it would. It is, as it manifests itself to be.

    0
  76. I disagree with this stance. Guns don't make the decision to kill, it is the people who wield them. Americans are going mad and will slaughter with whatever means are available - guns, knives, trucks, whatever.

The important thing is to improve healthcare and prosperity, to prevent insanity.

    4
  77. Criminals have guns. Police are too ineffective to stop it as police only exist to protect the property of the wealthy. Remember Uvalade? Americans need guns because police are not protecting us.

    0
  78. Apparently we do have to live like this. Since our law makers don't have the smarts nor spine to stop this stupid shit. Americans you've got absolutely no need for a gun. I don't care if you like to hunt. I don't care if you think you need to protect yourself and your loved ones. I don't care

    1
  79. I'll add there are countries with a lot of guns, but they don't have a lot of guns in the hands of just anyone. We literally, as a country, worship letting anyone walk in and buy a weapon of war without any serious vetting.

    0
  80. Heck, better gun laws in OUR country made things better until Congress let the crack down on assault-type weapons sunset!!!

    0
  81. New Zealand did it!

The republican party is the "party of children can be murdered so I can have my gun collection."

It IS about the guns AND about the ideology of hate constantly being reified on social media & Fox. BOTH are toxic and need to be regulated.

    0
  82. Canada here gun regulations work for us no Kevlar backpacks no active shooter drills just education as it should be hunters have their rifles people realize we don't need handguns which by the way are smuggled in from America im quite secure my grandkids will come home from school everyday

    0
  83. Any firearm law you implement will be ignored with impunity by white suprematists while being weaponized against the most vulnerable communities by police (white suprematists)

    1
  84. Call, Email your Republican members of Congress. Numbers are all available online. Nothing changes until we put pressure on them!!!

    0
  85. All that is true but keep in mind...

This is a bit like the redistricting fight.

If ONLY Blue states have tough gun laws, and Trump doesn't follow laws or expect his minions to (he'll pardon them like J6'rs)...

IT WILL BE UP TO US TO DEFEND OURSELVES FROM TERROR.

  86. The simple fact is the people in state legislative offices and in seats in Congress simply do not listen to constituents. They have insulated themselves by using those offices to create legislative seats where they receive no opposition and don't have to live there either yet make all decisions.

    0
  87. Most Americans are not so insecure that they worry more about the rights of gun owners than the lives of children. But our leaders listen to the few. It's time to replace them with leaders who will listen to the many.

    0
  88. We could add a surcharge & penalty to all ammunition & weapons

The penalty is calculated as follows:

Add-$1T per gun death Add-$500B per gun injury Add-$250B per shooter Add-$10M per bullets used ————— Total Per Crime Scene

Paid by manufacturers of the Guns and Bullets

    0
  89. If politicians were beholden to people instead of paychecks we wouldn't be in half of the messes we're in as a country. Not only do we have to get money out of politics, we also have to elect politicians who aren't willing to accept blood money as bribes

    0
  90. Yes. I hear a million reasons why we can't, can't, can't. Are Americans so weak willed that we have allowed ourselves to have bullets as the leading cause of the death of our children and can almost expect to be a victim of gun violence at some point? I guess the answer is sadly, "yes".

    0
  91. We have to hold the politicians accountable.

Call out the reps and how they vote.

    Call out their NRA funding.

    Make their lives literal misery.

    1
  92. Vote out all Republicans at every level and reasonable gun laws would be enacted within a very short period. That should be the Democrats political message.

    0
  93. IF the majority of citizens in the u.s. want gun reform they must A) Vote B) Vote all g.o.p./magats out of office C) Demand their u.s. senators impeach the corrupt cons on the s.c. after impeaching and convicting taco the flotus

There are solutions when you take out ALL the gop trash ASAP

    0
  94. We know the horror of gun violence. But the reason nothing changes isn’t a lack of outrage — it’s REDMAP. In 2010 Republicans rigged maps, stole majority rule, and silenced the voters who demand reform. Ban gerrymandering — that’s the real fix.

    0
  95. It’s wild o me that we have all this “law enforcement “ taking over cities to rid us of “dangerous criminals” but this white dude was able to kill kids praying.

    0
  96. We have hundreds of millions of guns already in circulation in the US. We need more radical thinking than just banning sales of assault rifles. We need guns turned in and we need restrictions on sales of bullets.

    1
  97. Do the magazines that fit AR-15 and AK-47 people killers fit any other weapons?

If they are specific to these types of killing weapons, ban the ammunition that feeds them.

    Just a thought.

    0
  98. I'm British, so I really dont get this idea of have a gun because it protects you. It's not a shield! If the other person has a gun and you start waving on e around why do you think they won't shoot you?

    0
