1)Everything Kennedy said about Bork was true and the bipartisan majority was right to reject him. 2)Bork being confirmed would have done absolutely nothing to forestall the rise of Trump. The two most hackish pro-Trump justices on the Supreme Court were nominated by the "normal" Republicans!

and what gets me is that it's not like Bork was brought down by, like, some slander campaign about his personal life. He was brought down by a speech in which Sen. Kennedy talked about his jurisprudence in a way that was inflammatory but largely accurate.
This is after Reagan's campaign convinced Iran to keep holding US hostages in captivity for several more months to win the 1980 election. That's about as cutthroat as it gets in electoral politics. www.nytimes.com/2023/03/18/u...
Bork was a case of scorched earth politics...by Republicans. Reagan could have sent up a compromise conservative candidate such as eventual nominee Kennedy from the get-go, instead of going with an ideologue from the fringe of the party who was sure to alienate moderates from both parties.

Crime in DC is a problem, but that is not why Trump is doing any of this. Trump is doing this to give himself and his supporters what they want, which is to see power exerted over those they've deemed to be outgroups.

this wasn't a swiftboating where they made outrageous, salacious slander campaigns against him. They attacked his professional record and his positions on the law.
