I don't really think he expected a pardon from Trump in exchange for his silence. I don't really think he'd be able to maintain silence with nothing in return once the pardon happened. Epstein needed to have something to lord over Trump, to keep him in his pocket.
Trump needed Epstein gone.

A small part of me wants to see him hold one with just enough sanity left to watch it all fall apart and die in prison. A blue tsunami next November to neuter his presidency, then impeach and indict him.
