  1. SCOOP: The NIH is moving to prohibit funded scientists, inside and outside the agency, from collecting data about gender, according to a draft policy I obtained. It’s part of the NIH’s aggressive crackdown on gender-identity research. www.chronicle.com/article/gend...

A draft rule would bar scientists funded by the agency from collecting data about gender identity, following other steps the administration has taken to restrict research on LGBT topics.

  2. This is a key point--terminations have hit every corner of the country.

See, e.g., the map below from our homepage at grant-witness.us

Awful lotta orange and yellow in Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio. Even Missouri. UAB alone has lost over $18M in funds it was previously awarded.

A few people have commented that states with NIH funding tend to be blue states. I offer these counterarguments:

    1. UAB is the largest employer in the entire state of Alabama
    2. Texas has $2 Billion in NIH funding
    3. Ohio has $1 Billion in NIH research funding

    And much much more!

  3. The Cruz Report identified ~3000 grants in 'DEI research' but the DOGE-adjacent terminations, (excluding Harvard & UCLA), terminated only about 1500. So either the 1/4 statistic is wildly off the mark or the Trump administration is, in fact, okay with the remaining half of 'DEI research.'

  4. The move by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to self-fund the study is a departure from their typical practice of responding to requests by government agencies or Congress for advice. insideclimatenews.org/news/0708202...

With the Trump administration raising doubts on climate science, the country’s premier science advisory group will fast-track a consensus document.

  5. If this sounds provocative, consider the language below, which appears to prohibit studies that recruit participants based on race.

So goodbye to studies on, say, the maternal mortality crisis among Black women or heart disease in Black men (to say nothing of studies on how racism affects health).

  6. To be sure, science has always been political. But now, the EO makes it partisan.

With Trumpy apparatchiks censoring everything they don't like, the science they fund may only benefit people they favor.

    (coughwhite folkscough)

Thanks to @aniloza.bsky.social and @statnews.com for reporting.

A gaggle of STAT's science reporters wrote about what the new Trump EO on federal grants means for researchers and the NIH

The bottom line is that it "turns science into an instrument for partisan gain" as @scott-delaney.bsky.social put it
