I think the moderate/progressive distinction is no longer helpful. Instead, it's people with ideas vs people just trucking along with the status quo (or critiquing those with ideas).

The war on immigration is just all bad in every possible direction. --It is very expensive --It radicalizes government agencies --It distorts US foreign policy --It is very harmful to the economy --It is also quite cruel.
There is no second/third order consequence that is positive.
Local jails–mostly run by elected sheriffs–are making money off of ICE's rampant criminalization of immigration.
